I have my computer on for most of the day and turn it off at night. When I have to go out, I put the computer on hibernate and turn off the monitor. I kept it on for about a week straight, and much dust collected in the computer. I have a desktop and because of aall of the dust that was collecting, the fan used to stop at random times and we thought the computer crashed. We finally got that fixed by cleaning it, and have never left it on all night again.

Indeed, leaving a computer on for long periods of time can have results like this. But at the same time, the same thing can happen over time with computers that are off. People don't understand that dust can build up in fans, resulting in overheating and other problems.

At the same time, it is possible to perform some maintenance (like cleaning out dust) on a computer while it is on. This is why we have web servers that have rediculous uptime (along with things like hot-swappable drives, etc.).

I have now started hovering out my whole computer (case + fans) every couple of months to have better performance.
