my computer is quite high tech consisting of 1- lian li all alloy case modified to improve the airflow
2- hiper type r 580watt power supply
3- asus p5w64 ws professional motherboard (latest bios)
absolutely the worst board i have ever come across, and the first bad board from asus.
4- processor intel core 2 duo e 6700 set to auto overclock if needed.
5- zalman cnps9700 led copper cooler (35c normal 45c load)
6- 3gb corsair dominator ddr2 8500 (1066mhz) plus
corsair airflow cooling fan.
7- saphire ati radion 1950 pro graphics card 512mb
i mainly do video editing and photography and dont like n videas video quality.
h 8- 3 x 160gb hitachi deskstar hard drives 8mb cache serial ata 7200rpm.
these were originally striped but i could not get any linux distros to dual boot at all with xp pro which was very fast, and now each is independant. (chosen for their read speed).
9 - 2 x 400gb samsung spinpoint hard drives 16mb cache serial ata 300 7200rpm.
these drives are used for storage (and were chosen for their write speed and reliability)
10 - 1 x 500gb western digital external hard drive usb2
this drive is used for backup of all doc's photos' vidios.
11 - combined floppy card reader usb2 powered and
very fast . (reads 7 formats)
12 - 1 samsung super writemaster 18x18x dvd ram
drive (flashed by samsung to the latest firmware) this one is dual layer pata and lightscribe .
13 - 1 samsung shw183a/bebn dvd rw drive also
(flashed by samsung to the latest firmware) this one is serial ata, and it has been a disaster it will
crash the computer 7 times out of 10 when writing anything, no matter what speed is selected I now
only use it to read, which it does mutch faster than the pata 15 mins quicker at installing xp. I think
it is a problem with the marvell sata drivers on this awful motherboard.
14 - usb2 - 5 port pci card only 8 usb's on this board
15 - 1 usb2 for printer h p photosmart
16 - 1 usb2 for scanner canon
17 - 1 usb2 for external hard drive
18 – 1 usb2 for monitor iiyama with usb1 hub
19 – 1 usb2 for keyboard saitek eclipse 11
20 – 1 usb2 for mouse razer copperhead blue
21 – 1 usb2 for wacom intuos 3 graphics pad
22 – 1 usb2 for d-link 4 port powered hub
23 – 1 usb2 for ipod charging and syncing
24 – 1 usb2 for skype phone connection
25 – 1 usb2 for flash drive connection
as you can see this is quite a complex computer set up, and I had tried unsuccessfully to install
linux dual booted on my striped and mirrored original alongside windows xp pro
formatting and rehashing the drives I decided to install ubuntu gutsy gibbon 7-10 on one of the spare 160 gb hitachi drives, not only did it install ok it found every bit of my hardware and loaded drivers for everything. printer worked perfectly scanner worked perfectly internet worked better
than in windows even though my isp says it does not support it, wacom tablet works fine. I popped
a dvd in the drive and up popped a box asking if I wanted to download codecs which I did and it played perfectly. it asked if I wanted to download drivers for my video card which I did .
displayed on the desktop were all my hard drives, I double clicked my storage drive and everything saved in windows was there available.
I then opened f spot photo manager it asked me if it could look for images on the other drives which I said ok to. it totally stunned me when it came back with 6743 images yes six thousand+ and asked if I wanted to copy them over to which I answered yes it took about 40 minits to complete, and all
pictures open in the gimp and are viewed as thumbnails
I downloaded and installed innotek's inno box virtualisation and now i have windows xp and photoshop cs3 running in a virtual machine on linux.
microsoft you had better watch out your programs dont load as fast dont shut down as fast and dont run as fast and cost far too much.
bill gates recently said that he had 10 computers in his house all running windows programs and that he had never tried the opposition, just how arrogant is that! how on earth do you build better technology without knowing what you are up against
a big thank you to mark shuttleworth and the canonical team
